About this Course
Mental illness is one of the biggest problems in the world. This is an advanced course that deals with the understanding, prevention and management of mental illness.
This course is taught and assessed at level 4/5 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF)
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to:-
Explain the different concepts of mental illness
Explain the different types of mental illness
Explain the causes of mental illness
Develop strategies on preventing mental illness
Manage mental illness in practice
Apply ethical standards in practice
Provide mental health advice and counselling
Target Audience
The course is suitable for anyone who is already working as or intends to work as a nurse, doctor, mental health worker, public health personnel, social care worker, social worker, resettlement worker, housing officer, homeless worker or in the charitable professions.
Course Structure
Year 1
Module 1: Management of Mental Health I (15 credits)
Module 2: Management of Mental Health II (15 credits)
Module 3: Healthcare Ethics (15 credits)
Module 4: Management and Economics (15 credits)
Module 5: Mental Health Law (15 credits)
Module 6: Research Methods (15 credits)
Year 2
Module 7: Field Practice - Practical application of knowledge (15 credits)
Module: Research Project (30 credits)
Course Delivery and Attendance
The course is delivered in a variety of methods, including direct lectures, case studies, tutorials, field practice and group work.
Assessment
Assessment of this course is based on essay-based written assignments, reports, presentations, research projects and direct examinations.

Entry Requirements
Applicants should have:-
1. Passes at GCSE at A/Level or equivalent standard; or
2. Completed a recognised certificate or diploma course in any field; or
3. Worked in a related field for 3 years or more; or
4. Not met the requirements above, but are at least 21 years of age (at the discretion of the College);
Every applicant must meet the English Language requirements
English Language Requirements
You must show competence in spoken and written English, in addition to meeting the entry requirements above. International students must demonstrate competence of the English Language at IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL (paper based) 550 or TOEFL (internet based) 79
Commencement Dates
September, January and May each year.
