About this course

Question - Have you ever wondered, why do 'other people' always get the best jobs in housing or social welfare?

Answer - They have the knowledge and qualifications employers want.

We have tailored the content of this course to help people get into housing or welfare for the first time. However, it is also suitable for those already working in housing or welfare who want to increase their knowledge or give their career a boost. Unlike many colleges, we take an active interest in your progress and offer a selection of extra student services free as part of the course, to help you kick start your career. An example is our Interview Skills Workshop which concentrates on the specifics of Housing and Welfare jobs (especially useful if you have no previous experience). We also operate a highly successful Voluntary Placement Scheme to help you find that all-important first job. We work with Employment Agencies who find our students very employable because of their high levels of knowledge after attending this course. You will receive extensive, easy to understand and beautifully written course materials (over 400 pages) which you will want to refer to time and again once you are working in your chosen sector. Many students decide to come back and take our Advanced Diploma in Housing Law and our Advanced Diploma in Social Care, Supported Housing and Disability Management. Whatever your level or experience, we are dedicated to maximising your chances of success in today's highly competitive job market.

Student Profile and Entry Requirements

The Advanced Certificate course is suitable both for people already working in housing organisations, or those who intend to work as housing officers, housing case workers, homelessness officers, tenancy or rent officers, benefit officers, DSS officers in public or private homes or officers in other related areas. Students who successfully complete this course will be entitled to use the letters CertHWM after their name. We are proud that we originally created this course over 10 years ago (others have made poor imitations of it), but it is still the best course you will find for depth of knowledge and up-to-date issues in housing and welfare.

This course is specifically for those wanting to develop their housing careers, so many students don't have previous housing experience. However, if you are already working in housing or welfare, this course will give you a surprising depth and range of knowledge. We focus on the management perspective when discussing issues, so you will find the content invaluable when you go for role changes or promotions. Just look at the subjects the course covers and you will see how a good knowledge of the contents will help you even in your current job. In fact, we offer variations on this course to many housing organisations and local authorities now, because we can provide more up to date training than they can!

There are no formal entry requirements, but applicants should be able to cope with Advanced Studies.

What do students who have completed this course say about it? We ask students to complete surveys at the end of each programme so that we know what you really think about us and our courses. This is a selection of comments from students who attended this course during 2006. Note - they are all genuine comments.

"The best part was learning about how to deal with interviews and fill application forms. The information and knowledge imparted has been quite an eye opener."
"I was recommended by someone who went through the course here and is now working. I was interested in a place with a track record of successfully placed candidates in the industry. The delivery was very practical. The tutors are motivational."
"My only comment is in fact to commend all the staff of Trans-Atlantic for their good work, help, patience and their support for us. I will reccommend this College to most of my own friends."
"I chose this college because of its reputation and the fact that it's been in existence for more than 10 years and still doing well by maintaining its reputation."
"I sincerely enjoyed every moment of this course. I appreciate greatly the help of the tutors and the staff generally."
"The best thing about the course is, having to learn so much in such a short time and still understand most of it all. Most importantly the "Interview Skills" has been very, very helpful. It's given me more hope and confidence."
